FAA Issues SAIB for Garmin G1000
The FAA has issued a special airworthiness information bulletin (SAIB) to owners and operators of aircraft equipped with Garmin G1000, Perspective™, Prodigy™ Integrated Flight Decks installed with a GFC-700 Autopilot.

The SAIB is to inform pilots of an issue with the navigational radio-auto-tune feature while performing a VOR or ILS Approach. Due to changes in navigation frequencies between database cycles, an incorrect LOC/ILS frequency may occur; causing the HIS to automatically slew the wrong course.
This concern is not an unsafe condition that would warrant airworthiness directive action.

To correct the issue, manually tune the navigation receiver and manually fly the approach. Garmin plans to resolve the problem with GDU software version 10.00.

Press Release: Trig Avionics transponder certified for ADS-B Out
TT31 Mode S transponder receives first European C166a approval
Edinburgh, 17 April 2009
EASA, the European Aviation Safety Agency, has approved the Trig Avionics TT31 Mode S transponder for ETSO C166a, the ADS-B technical standard for 1090 MHz extended squitter transmission. The TT31 is the world’s first transponder to receive this European approval, and provides a cost effective route to next generation ATC surveillance. All TT31 transponders are ADS-B capable – Trig make no charge for this feature, although some older units will require a software update.

ADS-B stands for Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast, and is a system to automatically transmit aircraft identity, altitude, position and velocity to ground users and to other aircraft. The international standard data link for these transmissions is based on Mode S transponder technology, and the transmission mechanism is called “Extended Squitter” or ES. The Trig TT31 is a Mode S transponder which also supports this extended squitter function. Not only does the TT31 satisfy current Mode S requirements, but by connecting a suitable GPS position source, the aircraft can also report all the required parameters to comply with current and proposed future ADS-B requirements.

Today ADS-B is used as a tool for providing ATC surveillance in areas where conventional radar surveillance is not technically possible, such as over water in the North Sea, the Mediterranean, the Hudson Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, or in the Australian outback. In future, ADS-B is seen as an enabling technology for better airspace utilisation, for example by supporting in-trail procedures and higher density operations, and as a way of providing affordable collision avoidance for light aircraft.

GPS/WAAS Display Upgrade

Bendix /King recently announced a GPS/WAAS Display upgrade for the EFIS-40 & EFIS-50 systems on the TBM 700 & PC-12 aircraft. The Symbol Generator Software (SW) Modification (MOD) 15/01 will enable the EFIS 40/50 system to display the correct WAAS vertical deviation when GPS is selected as the navigation source and connected to a WAAS enabled GPS receiver via an ARINC 429 interface. This allows the KFC-325 autopilot to remain coupled to the EFIS system display when flying an LPV.

The upgrade also allows autopilot enabled output and display of lateral deviations and vertical guidance while on other WAAS GPS approaches.

Separate annunciations may be required to support WAAS, depending on the GPS installation and supporting STC. The upgrade is applicable to EFIS 40/50 SG 465 Symbol Generators on the TBM 700 and PC-12 aircraft having Part Numbers 066-04021-1108 through -1114. The applicable SG 465 part numbers will be converted to P/N: 066-04021-1115.

Upgrade list price: $5,000. Southeast Aerospace will also be offering upgrade exchanges for non-WAAS units. Please Contact SEA for details on exchanges.

Garmin GTX-330/33 Transponders Receive TSO
Garmin recently received FAA’s TSO-C166a authorization for the GTX-330 & GTX-33 Transponders w/1090 MHz Extended Squitter (ES) transmission capabilities. Garmin is the first in the avionics industry to receive TSO-C166a authorization for a general aviation transponder.

“ES is the cornerstone of the FAA’s Next Generation airspace system and it provides precise information about the aircraft’s location to Air Traffic Control and other ADS-B equipped aircraft in the vicinity,” said Gary Kelley, VP of Marketing.

The FAA is beginning to implement a nationwide ADS-B infrastructure. They announced a dual link decision using the 1090 MHz ES and UAT mediums for ADS-B, and have proposed a mandate that all aircraft have ADS-B Out capabilities by January 1st, 2020.

Garmin is offering an upgrade for non-ES GTX-330/33 units to GTX-330/33 with ES. The option to upgrade to a Diversity w/ES unit is also available. All upgrades include a new 2-year Warranty. List Price for ES Upgrade: $1,200. List Price for Diversity & ES Upgrade: $6,200.

Contact SEA’s Aircraft Modifications Manager, Rob Reed for additional information on the GTX Transponders and Upgrade Options.

Canadian 406 ELT Mandate
Canada recently confirmed the decision to make 406 MHz ELTs mandatory on every aircraft with the exception of gliders, balloons, ultralights & a few special-use aircraft. This extends to all foreign-registered aircraft, including aircraft used for flights that begin & end in the US, but fly over Canadian territory.

Transport Canada, and the military, which handles most SAR operations in Canada see the rule as necessary. The Search and Rescue Satellites will stop monitoring 121.5 MHz on February 1st, 2009.

At least 63,000 foreign-registered light aircraft, 90% American registered, touch down in Canada during May 2007 through May 2008.

Transport Canada is planning on phasing in the requirement. The phase-in, as now proposed, will mandate all affected aircraft be equipped with an approved 406 ELT on Feb. 1st, 2011 or during their last annual inspection before that date.

With the Canadian Parliament being prorogued until late January, TCCA has advised that there is a possibility the new ELT requirements might not make it through the legal process in time to take effect in February as planned. However, the intent is still to aim for publication of the amended CARs at the earliest opportunity and proceed with the exemption at the same time.

406 MHz ELTs offer significant safety enhancements to any aircraft flying in any location. Less expensive ELTs are frequently being introduced to the market, making it a relative inexpensive & dependable choice.

Contact Southeast Aerospace today for additional information, available cost effective ELTs & installation of 406 MHz ELTs.

G600 Update
The recently released Garmin G600 makes available after-market retrofit glass cockpits to the older aircraft market.

The system features a solid-state AHRS with additional inputs provided by GPS, magnetometer and digital air data computer. When interfaced with a WAAS-upgraded avionics suite, the G600 has all the features and capabilities of integrated solutions.

Garmin released a Supplemental Type Certification for the G600 provided under an Approved Model List format, consisting of 785 Aircraft. As the G600 offers expanded capabilities for retrofits, the following should be noted:
  • While the G600 is STC'd in the Cessna 441 Conquest, the Cessna 1000 autopilot is not at this time. Most Conquests have either the Cessna 1000 or Collins APS-65 autopilot. The G600 is approved for interface to the Collins APS-65.

  • Although the Garmin G600 is STC'd in the Socata TBM-700, it has been discovered that Garmin is still finalizing the Flight Director interface with the KFC-325 autopilot. The Flight Director information will not be displayed at this time if your TBM-700 was equipped with Honeywell EFIS-40.
Garmin is expected to have both interfaces approved by the first quarter of 2009.

For further information on the Garmin G600, please contact SEA’s Aircraft Modifications Manager Rob Reed at 321-255-9877 Ext. 228.
